MSC plans general rate increase Aug 1  (From American Shipper)

A $1,000 increase is announced for 40-foot containers moving from Asia to the U.S., effective August 1.   It said the GRI will be $800 for 20-foot containers and $1,000 for 40-foot containers, $1,125 for 40-foot high cube containers and $1,266 for 45-foot containers. For more info, please go to

Additional tariffs on China list 4 goods on hold (From Sandler Travis)

President Trump announced Jun 29 following a meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping that the U.S. will suspend plans to impose additional tariffs of up to 25 percent on so-called List 4 goods from China, which have a current import value of $300 billion.  The U.S. and China have been negotiating an agreement  aimed at resolving issues such as forced technology transfer, intellectual property rights, currency, and agriculture.  For more information, please go to

List 3 exclusions now being accepted (From Sandler Travis)

Container shippers getting hit with war risk surcharges (From American Shipper)

The tensions in the waters around the Strait of Hormuz are beginning to hit container shippers in the pocketbook. CMA CGM and X-Press feeders have implemented surcharges, and other carriers are evaluating the situation.   CMA CGM announced July 8 it will implement a $36-per-TEU war risk surcharge, citing “recent incidents in the Strait of Hormuz and the related significantly increasing insurance costs in the Middle East Gulf region.” This week Maersk and Hapag-Lloyd announced a $42-per-TEU surcharge and Mediterranean Shipping Company a $40-per-TEU charge, while APL is charging $38 per TEU.
   The Federal Maritime Commission said it also has had notices from Ocean Network Express, Wan Hai and Hoegh Autoliners of their intent to implement surcharges. For more info, please go to

TTB relaxing fill requirements for spirits & wine (From American Shipper)

 The Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau (TTB) on Monday published notices of proposed rulemaking that would relax standards of fill requirements for containers that store distilled spirits and wine.  The proposed rule for distilled spirits would eliminate all but minimum and maximum standards of fill for distilled spirits containers, thus eliminating “unnecessary regulatory requirements,” the agency said.  For more info, please go to
